How to Identify Hydraulic Thread Types with a Thread Gauge Kit

Published: Aug 2026 · by HYCTON, hydraulic fittings sourcing partner in China

The single most common cause of a "wrong fitting" order is a misidentified thread. A 1/2" BSP looks nearly identical to a 1/2" NPT to the eye, but the two are not interchangeable - and a mismatch means a leaking joint, a stopped machine, and a re-order. This is exactly why a thread gauge kit (a caliber kit) belongs in every workshop and every buying office.

In this guide, we show you how to identify the main hydraulic thread types using an affordable thread identification kit, so you can order the right fittings the first time.

Why thread identification matters

Hydraulic fittings connect with precision threads. If you confuse the standard - even by one thread-per-inch - the parts won't seal. Common problems from wrong identification:

A caliper and thread gauge kit solves this at the source: you measure the diameter and the thread pitch, match them to a standard, and order with confidence.

The main hydraulic thread standards you'll meet

Most global hydraulic systems use one of these five families. Knowing the difference is the heart of thread identification.

Standard Thread type Common in Seal
JIC (SAE J514)UNF / UN (inch)North America37° flare
NPT / NPTFTapered (inch)US plumbing / generaltaper thread
BSP / BSPTBritish parallel / taperEurope, Asia, UK60° + seal / taper
SAE O-Ring Boss (ORB)UNF straightNorth AmericaO-ring face seal
Metric (DIN 2353 etc.)Metric pitchEurope, global OEMcutting ring / O-ring

At a glance: JIC and NPT are easy to confuse with the eye, yet they seal completely differently. This is the #1 reason fitters keep a thread gauge kit handy.

How to use a thread gauge kit to identify a fitting

A modern caliber thread kit (like HYCTON's branded Thread ID kit) lets you identify a thread in under a minute. Here's the 3-step method:

Step 1 - Measure the diameter

Use the digital caliper to measure the outer diameter of the male thread (or inner of female). Write it down. For example, 0.75" or 19mm.

Step 2 - Measure the thread pitch

Use the pitch gauge (the "leaves" or teeth) to find the matching thread-per-inch (TPI) for inch threads, or the pitch in mm for metric threads. A good thread identification kit includes both metric and imperial leaves.

Step 3 - Match to a standard

Combine diameter + pitch and compare to your standard's reference chart. Example: 0.75" diameter with 16 TPI = typical 3/4-16 UNF (JIC / ORB). 19mm with 1.5mm pitch = metric DIN.

When the thread is tapered (wider at the base) it's likely NPT or BSPT; if it has a 37° or 45° flare face it's JIC or SAE flare. The gauge plus a quick look at the seal surface nails it.

Buyer's tip: stock fewer wrong parts

If you import or distribute hydraulic fittings, letting your team identify threads before ordering cuts returns and speeds up supply. A branded thread gauge kit is also a great, low-cost gift that keeps your name in your customer's toolbox.
